Lakewood is the city directly west of Denver in Jefferson County, running from the Denver line out to the foothills. It's one of the largest cities in the metro area, and its west side gets you to trailheads in minutes while its east side is a quick drive into central Denver.
East Lakewood, closest to Denver, has a lot of brick ranches from the 1940s and 1950s on decent-sized lots. Around Belmar you'll find newer condos, apartments and townhomes within walking distance of shops. The Green Mountain area on the west side has homes from the 1970s and 1980s, many with mountain or city views, and south Lakewood near Bear Creek mixes ranches, two-stories and some townhome communities.
Belmar is Lakewood's downtown, a walkable district of restaurants, shops, a movie theater and housing built on the site of the old Villa Italia mall at Wadsworth Boulevard and Alameda Avenue. The Lakewood Heritage Center covers local history, and the Denver Federal Center is one of the area's large employers.
William F. Hayden Park on Green Mountain has hiking and mountain biking trails with views back toward the city. Bear Creek Lake Park has a reservoir, campground and trails, and the Bear Creek Greenbelt follows the creek through south Lakewood. Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre is about 15 to 20 minutes west, near Morrison.
The W Line light rail runs through Lakewood, with stations including Lamar, Wadsworth, Oak and Federal Center, and reaches Union Station in under half an hour from central Lakewood. Sixth Avenue, Wadsworth and C-470 handle most car trips, and I-70 to the mountains is close by.
