Arvada sits northwest of Denver, mostly in Jefferson County with a small piece in Adams County. Its history goes back to 1850, when Lewis Ralston found gold in the creek that now carries his name, one of the first recorded gold finds in Colorado. Today the city stretches from its historic downtown out to new subdivisions near the foothills.
Olde Town is the city's original downtown, a few walkable blocks of restaurants, breweries, bars and shops around Grandview Avenue. The G Line commuter rail stops right at the edge of Olde Town and reaches Union Station in about 20 minutes, which makes the surrounding blocks popular with people who work downtown. Summer brings outdoor concerts and festivals to the plaza.
The streets closest to Olde Town have early-1900s bungalows and small cottages. Much of central and south Arvada is 1950s through 1970s ranches, split-levels and bi-levels. Northwest Arvada is where the new construction is, in master-planned communities like Candelas and Leyden Rock with mountain views and newer schools. A few areas on the west side still have small-acreage lots zoned for horses.
The Ralston Creek Trail runs east to west across the city, and the Apex Park and Recreation District runs recreation centers, pools and golf courses for most residents. Majestic View Nature Center and Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge offer quieter walks, and Golden and the Clear Creek trails are a short drive west. The Arvada Center hosts theater, concerts and art exhibits year-round.
